Hamlin began racing go-karts at the age of seven and won over 50 races in his nine-year career. In 1997, at age 16, Hamlin moved into Mini Stock Cars at Langley and Southside Speedway near Richmond, and the accumulation of race wins and track championships began. Hamlin quickly moved up to Grand Stock Division racing in 1998, and by 2000, he began his first year of Late Model Stock Car competition.

Throughout the course of Hamlin's career, the gathering of impressive statistics have certainly become the norm. In 2003 and 2004 combined, Hamlin took 57 poles and won 54 races in just 83 starts of late model competition. During the latter part of 2004, Hamlin made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut. He turned in a very solid performance by qualifying seventh and finishing tenth at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Hamlin went on to make a total of five truck series starts in 2004 before finally getting a taste of NASCAR Busch Series action. Racing in the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet, Hamlin finished a very strong eighth at the track "Too Tough to Tame", the famous Darlington Raceway. The Darlington race would be Hamlin's only Busch Series start in 2004.

Hamlin, after being born in Tampa and spending a majority of his childhood in Chesterfield, Virginia, currently lives in Davidson, North Carolina. When he is not racing on the track, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends and also racing online in a league that features several NASCAR Regulars including former Busch Series Champion Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and current reigning Busch Series Champion Martin Truex, Jr.
